Greenkeep: a free lane-defence game where your garden is never destroyed

By KittyHome · · 3 min read

Greenkeep is a free lane-defence strategy game from KittyHome. You grow a garden of plants that defends itself lane by lane, and you raid other players' gardens with an army of insects. The twist is in the tagline: your garden is never demolished, but your harvest is always up for grabs. It plays in any modern browser at app.greenkeep.org and on Android, in sessions of three to eight minutes.

What is a lane-defence game?

In a lane-defence game, attackers come down a few straight lanes and you place defenders in a grid to stop them before they reach the end. It's a cousin of tower defence, but every lane is its own small fight, so you can see exactly what went wrong: which lane broke, which defender was missing, which attacker got through. Greenkeep keeps that clarity and adds a real multiplayer game on top.

Grow the garden: what makes Greenkeep different

  • A garden you keep. Your plants keep their levels and positions forever. A lost defence costs some stored resources and trophies, never the garden you built.
  • Attackers are players, not scripted waves. Other keepers raid you with insect armies they chose and timed themselves.
  • You never need to be online to defend. Attackers fight a snapshot of your garden; you watch the replay later in your defence log.
  • A growing battlefield. Your village level adds lanes and planting columns, from three lanes and two columns at the start to six and six at the top.
  • The Garden Codex, an almanac of every plant and insect you've met, with the counters that beat them.

Command the swarm: raids

Raids are the competitive heart of Greenkeep. You attack a real player's garden in four phases: scout the layout and the loot on offer, deploy insects lane by lane with your queue order and release timing, watch the battle play out, and read the result and the replay. Stars come from the lanes you break, and they pay loot and trophies. Learn how to plan a raid.

Fifty story missions

Story mode has five handcrafted chapters of ten stages each, every one teaching a mechanic before it matters: from the Sunlit Lawn and its two seed slots to night, water lanes, fog and finally the roof. Each stage has Normal, Hard and Elite tiers, and clearing chapter bosses is how most plants join your collection. Start with the beginner's guide.

Play with a team

  • Team matches: 24-hour wars between teams of 5 or 10, seated in a three-layer formation that has to be cracked front to back. Everyone seated gets two attacks.
  • The Gold Cup: a season of daily team pairings with a published table, two points a win.

Free to play, not pay to win

Every plant, insect, map and mode is earned by playing. The store sells optional packs of coins, gems and leaves as a shortcut, and nothing is locked behind them. Levels, not purchases, carry most of a unit's power, new units bring counters rather than raw strength, and raids cap what an attacker can bring, so a bought army can't simply out-spend the garden it attacks.

Questions people ask

Is Greenkeep free?

Yes. Everything in the game is earned by playing. Optional packs of coins, gems and leaves are a shortcut, not a requirement.

Can I play Greenkeep in my browser?

Yes, at app.greenkeep.org, with no install. There's also an Android build on greenkeep.org's Download page.

Do I lose my garden if I'm raided?

No. Plants keep their levels and positions. A successful raid takes part of your unprotected stored resources and some trophies, and you get a shield afterwards so nobody can farm you.

Is Greenkeep finished?

It's in development and playable now: five story chapters, raids, team matches and seasons are live, and new plants, insects, maps and modes keep arriving.
