How to autofill job applications in Chrome, and still check every answer

By KittyHome · · 4 min read

The fastest way to autofill job applications in Chrome is to save your details once, in a profile, and let an extension put them into each form for you. The KittyHome extension does that: Fill puts your profile into the form, with no limit on any plan, and Smart fill goes further, with AI that reads the whole form and drafts the open questions from the job posting. Nothing is sent to the employer until you check it and press their Submit button yourself.

Why Chrome's own autofill isn't enough

Chrome's built-in autofill knows your name, email, phone and address. A job application asks for much more: your work history, your school and degree, your LinkedIn and portfolio, whether you're authorized to work in the country, whether you'll need sponsorship, your notice period, your salary expectation, a résumé upload, and one or two open questions such as "Why do you want to work here?". Every careers site words them differently and builds its own drop-downs, so you end up typing the same answers dozens of times.

Step 1: save your profile once

Open the extension's profile page and fill it in once: contact details and links, work history, education, skills, a short summary, and your résumé and cover letter (PDF, Word or text, up to 5 MB). It stays in your browser unless you choose to keep an encrypted copy in your KittyHome account, to use it on another computer.

Then answer the "Questions sites ask": the most common application questions that aren't a profile field, from how you heard about the job to whether you've worked there before. Work authorization has a row per country and salary a row per currency, so "Are you authorized to work in Canada?" and "…in the UK?" each get the right answer. Here's how to answer the common questions well.

Step 2: open an application and press Fill

On a page with a form it can fill, a KittyHome button appears at the right edge ("Fill 12 fields"). You can also use Fill this page in the popup or press Alt+Shift+F. A panel shows what it found and what it will put where, and nothing goes into the page until you press Fill.

  • Text boxes, lists, radio buttons, checkbox groups, dates and months.
  • Sites' own drop-downs, the ones that open, search and pick. It opens them and searches like a person would ("UK" also tries "United Kingdom").
  • Your résumé and cover letter, attached to the upload fields that ask for them.
  • Forms inside frames, such as a job board embedded in a company's careers page.
  • Answers worked out from your profile: "Do you have at least 5 years of experience?" gets a yes or no, not a number.

Step 3: Smart fill for the rest

Smart fill is the AI part. It reads the whole form, fills what your profile and saved answers cover, and drafts the open questions from the job posting on the page and the work, education and skills in your profile (never your contact details). On forms with several steps, it does each step. You read every draft before you send anything.

ProNo limit25$12.99 a month
UltimateNo limit75$24.99 a month

A Smart fill counts once per form, or once per step of a form that has several, however many tries it takes. One that can't finish doesn't count. When they run out for the day, Fill still puts in everything your profile answers. See the plans.

What it never does

  • It never submits. Pressing Submit is always yours.
  • It never fills passwords, card details, one-time codes or identity numbers, hidden fields or single consent checkboxes.
  • It leaves what only you should answer: voluntary self-identification (gender, ethnicity, disability, veteran status) and questions like "Are you a U.S. citizen?".
  • It doesn't send your profile's values to work out a field. If a field's label is unclear, only the label, its choices and the names of your profile's items are sent, and you can switch that off.

Which job sites does it work on?

It reads ordinary forms on any site and has tuned support for the application systems behind most tech job postings: Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Jobvite and Workable. On other sites it works from labels, names and autocomplete hints, and anything it isn't sure about is left for you, with a list in the panel.

Apply faster without sounding like a template

Speed only helps if the answers are good. Keep your profile's summary specific, check every Smart fill draft against the posting, and add one sentence of your own to the "Why us?" answers. The extension saves you the typing; you keep the judgment.

Questions people ask

Is there a free job application autofill?

Yes. Filling a form from your profile has no limit on any plan, including Free, and Free also includes 5 Smart fills a day.

Does it submit applications for me?

No. It fills the form and stops. You review everything and press the site's Submit button yourself.

Is my data safe?

Your profile stays in your browser unless you choose to sync an encrypted copy through your KittyHome account. Filling from your profile happens in your browser. Smart fill sends the form and what it needs to fill it to the KittyHome server, only when you use it, and nothing reaches the employer until you submit.

Does it work with Workday?

It fills the drop-downs and buttons Workday-style forms use, but Workday has no tuned support yet. Anything it can't fill is listed in the panel for you to do yourself.
