Translate or explain any text you select in Chrome
By KittyHome · · 3 min read
When you hit a sentence you don't understand, the usual fix is a new tab, a translator, copy, paste, and back. With the KittyHome extension you select the text instead: a small toolbar appears with 🌐 Translate and 💡 Explain, and the answer shows right there on the page. Copy it, or, if you're writing in a text box, replace your selection with it.
How it works
- Select a word, a sentence or a paragraph on any web page.
- Choose 🌐 Translate or 💡 Explain in the toolbar that appears.
- Read the answer next to the text. Copy it, or Replace the selection when it's in a text box.
You choose the language it translates and explains into once, in the popup. Every answer is in that language, whatever the page is in.
Translate: read and write in other languages
- Read a news article, a forum thread or a product page in a language you don't speak.
- Write in one: type your message in your own language, select it, translate it, and replace it in place before you send.
- Check yourself while learning: write in the language you're learning, then translate it back to see whether it says what you meant.
Explain: jargon, contracts and code, in plain words
Explain is for text you can read but don't quite understand: a clause in a contract, a medical term, a line of code, an acronym in a work email. It tells you what it means in plain words, in your language.
| Select | You get |
|---|---|
| "Indemnify and hold harmless" | What you're agreeing to, in a sentence or two |
| An error message | What went wrong and what usually fixes it |
| A sentence full of acronyms | Each one spelled out, and what the sentence says |
| A paragraph from a paper | The idea in everyday words |
Look it up, with sources
On Pro and Ultimate, an explanation has a Look it up button. It answers from a web search instead of from the model's memory, and shows the pages it used, for things that change or that you want to check. Pro has 10 lookups a day and Ultimate 15. It's off unless you press it, each time.
On the writing desk too
Your new tab has a writing desk with Translate and Explain buttons. Paste a whole email or a paragraph there to translate or understand it in one go, then copy the answer.
What's sent, and when
Nothing is sent until you press Translate or Explain. Then only the text you selected goes to the KittyHome server to write the answer. Password, card and one-time code fields are never touched.
