What is the Grid? One cat, one account, every KittyHome world

By KittyHome · · 4 min read

The Grid (hub.kittyhome.org) is the front door to every KittyHome world. You pick what you came for, it shows you which world has people in it right now, and one cat and one free account take you into all of them. Today that means two worlds: Meowtopia, to hang out, play and build your own place, and Purrla, to practice speaking a language with real people.

Why one front door

Most online worlds are islands: a new site, a new account, a new avatar, a new friends list. KittyHome went the other way. Every world is a separate place built for one thing, and they all share your account, your cat and the people you know. You set up once and move between them like rooms in the same house.

The Grid is the hallway. It is a plain, fast page on purpose: it opens in a second on any phone or laptop, it works without a powerful graphics card, and it tells you what's happening before you step into a 3D world.

What you see on the Grid

  • "Where to, cat?" and "What brings you here?": three choices (play and hang out, practice a language, or just look around). Your pick moves the matching world to the front and is remembered for next time.
  • A card for each world with what's live there: how many cats are in Meowtopia right now and how many are in a battle, whether Happy Hour is on, and in Purrla how many people are practicing and how many are sitting at a table. The numbers refresh every 15 seconds.
  • Who you're signed in as. It's the same KittyHome account everywhere, so signing in once on the Grid signs you in to every world.

The worlds you can enter today

Meowtopia: hang out, play and build

Meowtopia is a free 3D world in your browser where you come as a cat. There's a plaza and four districts to explore, a Battle Arena with three team games (Paw Blaster, Summit Rush and Sky Brawl), an arcade, daily duties and a daily puzzle. Every member gets a village of their own to build from colored cubes and share with a link, and if you're stuck on something, you can ask a question and a little cat carries it around the world until someone answers. Read more about Meowtopia.

Purrla: practice a language by talking with people

Purrla is a small 3D campus with a café for each language. Walk your cat to a table, sit down, and you're in a voice and text conversation with up to eight people, with something to talk about on the table. You can also find an exchange partner who speaks what you're learning and learns what you speak, and trade fifteen minutes in each language. Read how Purrla works.

One account, one cat

You can look around as a guest. To talk, play in the arena or keep a village, make a free KittyHome account with Google, GitHub or an email address. That account follows you:

  • Your cat and its look are the same in every world.
  • Your name tag shows the languages you speak and the ones you're learning, in Meowtopia and in Purrla.
  • Points and coins you earn in Meowtopia are yours wherever you are; coins buy looks, never an advantage in a game.
  • Blocks and reports apply everywhere, so someone you've blocked in one world can't bother you in another.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants a friendly place to spend time online with other people: students, gamers, people learning a language, people who just want company in the evening. There's nothing to install. Everything runs in a browser on a computer or a phone.

What's next for the Grid

Each new KittyHome world is one more card on the Grid. Because your account and your cat already come with you, a new world is ready for you the moment it opens, with your friends already in it.

Questions people ask

Is the Grid free?

Yes. The Grid, Meowtopia and Purrla are free to use. In Meowtopia you can buy coins for looks for your cat, but nothing you buy makes you stronger in a game.

Do I need to download anything?

No. The Grid and every world open in your browser, on a computer or a phone.

Do I need a separate account for each world?

No. One KittyHome account (Google, GitHub or email) works on the Grid, in Meowtopia and in Purrla, with the same cat.

What's the address?

hub.kittyhome.org. Links to Meowtopia's help, a member's village or the arena also go through the Grid, which forwards you to the right spot.
